“Sir, you need to leave your room right now,” said the receptionist at the lobby. Twenty minutes later I found myself out on the street, carrying all my belongings on my back, looking for a place to stay the night. Yes, I was kicked out of my hotel 3 weeks ago.
Ah, minimalism. I'm working at it and am also being forced to do so by repeatedly bizarre, coincidental happenings forcing me to downsize, again and again. Last year I bought a campervan and essentially had my life and home with me at all times. After a winter of repairs etc. I'm hoping to hit the road again soon. I do weigh up the pros and cons of can versus a bag, but in my case, I'm a musician and have equipment that just wouldn't fit in a bag. That's one of the reasons. And when I think of the cost and at times pain of public transport and how limiting it can be, I am happy to have my van, which can take me to remote areas too, as well as save on accommodation.
Everyday I work on letting go of more stuff though. This is where I struggle. So when I'm back "home" in the UK, not that I have my own home anymore, I frequently throw away clothes and old tat. It feels very good!
Tganks for sharing your tips. You're right, this could be a book!
Great info. I lived for a few years in a small bag like you describe, although my goal was always to have the bag fit on carry-on which is slightly larger than 35L. I feel far away from that life now, but it's good to be reminded of what's really necessary, easy to lose track of that in modern society.
